Pastéis de nata

This Saturday ESN had a cooking workshop where they showed how to make these tasty pastries called pastel de nata and I decided to give it a try when there was a peak in the existential crisis I'm sure we all experience by now. If anyone wants the original video I followed, you can visit the instagram account of @esnlisboa and find it in their feed.

So let's get started!

Basically what you need for this receipt are things that most households already have around:

~0,5 L of milk

~1 lemon peel

~1 cinnamon stick

~250 g of sugar

~50 g of flour

~1 egg

~5 egg yolks

~puff pastry

And here are the instructions:

1.You prepare everything so following the instructions can be easy and quick. This recipe doesn't take out much time from our day.

Also, preheat the oven to 240 degrees.

2. Melt some butter and put it on the forms so it won't stick once you put the puff pastry in it. Then go on and cut out circles from the pastry using a cup that is slightly bigger than the size of the forms. Put the cut out circles in the forms.

3.Now it's time to prepare the custard. Boil the milk and while it's on the stove put the lemon peel in the cinnamon stick in it and enjoy your kitchen smelling like heaven.

4. Mix the sugar and flour together then pour it in the pan with the milk and mix that too. After this step add the egg and the egg yolks. Mix them too.

5. Pour the custard mixture in the little cups and put them in the oven for around 20 minutes when you start to see the signature burnt spots on the top.

6. Bon appetit! Enjoy your little piece of Portugal!
